WHY YOGA

Barbara Allen In today’s modern world, people are busy and often “out of body” in the rush of life. Yoga is a means to land; to truly arrive back to our authentic selves. When you come deeply into the present moment, it is different than collapsing onto a sofa after dinner or going to bed exhausted. Using the movement of yoga (asana) combined with breath work (pranyama), we begin to relax. Layering on restorative yoga, known as Bliss Yoga, we begin to shed deeply embedded stress and anxiety.
Come to yoga to rest; to land; to be.

At the age of 45, my immune system collapsed and I became debilitated for eight years with various chronic health issues. With an upturn in my health in 2001, I entered a graduate coaching program where I was assigned to take on the practice of yoga. Always active I grew up in dance – ballet, tap and modern - along with sports, hunting, fishing, and camping. My years of incapacity were completely disorienting causing me to learn about my body in a newly internal manner. Before this occurred, I understood the concept of mind/body/spirit connection and had been deeply involved in spiritual practices for decades.

Yoga brought it all together for me. At first, my extra 40 pounds of weight made doing yoga uncomfortable; I was very self-conscious and hated what was supposed to be a resting pose. I had lost flexibility, balance, and strength. Doggedly, I continued and came to a place of newfound integration that had not been available to me through other physical modalities. With my own results so promising, I began integrating yoga into coaching programs for clients. (And, I lost those 40 pounds of extra weight, too!)


OFFERINGS

    • Teaching traditional hatha yoga, I’m influenced by many awesome teachers.
    • Bliss Yoga is a specialized form of restorative through my studies with Judith Lasater (www.judithlasater.com). These two hour evening workshops are deeply refreshing leading to improved sleep, increased energy and much more!
  • Somatic Assessments – these one-time assessments are for anyone looking for ways to enhance their self-development efforts. After a 90-minute private session, a written report is created with recommendations for breathing (pranyama) practices, targeted stretches and a customize sun salutation (series of yoga poses). Helpful photographs are included. Designed for the client’s current journey of growth, every program is naturally different.
  • Working with a counselor, therapist or other coach? These assessments are designed to complement, not compete with your ongoing development.
